----------------- BitMo™Tweed Meister™ Mod Kit ---------------
for theFender MusicMaster amp
<></>
The Fender MusicMaster amp is one of Fender’s last hand wired tag board amps from the ‘70s. Originally intended as an entry-level bass amp (for which it generally sucks ;^), it is a 10-12 watt combo with a 12”speaker. With a few mods, it works great for guitar or harp. It has a single 12AX7 preamp tube and either 2 6V6 or 6AQ5 power tubes in push-pull mode, and uses a transformer as a phase inverter instead of a tube. These amps are still a real bargain (but prices have nearly doubled in the last few years).
The BitMo Tweed Meister kit rewires the whole preamp section, replacing the volume pot, tone caps, and virtually all the other preamp resistors and caps to match the circuit configuration of a tweed Fender Princeton 5E2. From there, I have changed the values of a few key components bring it to the BitMo standards of tone. With the dual output tubes, it is very similar to the coveted classic tweed Deluxe.
These mods will work with either the 6V6 or 6AQ5 version. Many people prefer the 6V6 and are willing to pay a premium, but – 6AQ5s sound very similar with perhaps a just little less base and volume. There are no current-production 6AQ5s but NOS versions are plentiful and a lot cheaper than NOS 6V6s.
I also recommend that you replace the woosy stock speaker with a nice alnico or whatever you like. A Fender labeled Eminence as standard in current-production Fender Deluxe amps works very well.
Assumptions, warnings, etc:
·
· These amps contain potentially lethal voltages. You must discharge the capacitors. They are not “self-discharging” like some more modern amps. I include a discharging probe.
· Tools you will need – screwdriver, tiny eyeglass screwdriver, soldering iron, rosin core solder, wire stripper, needle nose pliers.
