The Fender PawnShop Excelsior is a very cool and quirky tube amp with a fantastic price. Thedual 6V6 based circuit is actually similar to a tweed Princeton with greatsounding tremolo and a 15” speaker. Besides guitar, the amp can be reconfiguredto work well with harmonica, pedal and lap steel and, of course accordion.
The main complaint about the Excelsior is with theamp’s unusual tone switch – the BRIGHT setting is too bright and the DARKsetting is dull and lifeless.
This BitMoExcelerant™ mod kit convertsthis negative “quirk” into a real plus. The existing switch is reconfigured –the DARK setting is adjusted to produce a sweet balanced voicing with maximumclean headroom. The other position is converted into a gain boost overdrive witha real juicy voicing. These 2 new ranges keep and accentuate the other naturalattributes of the amp – a great old-school looseness, compression and presence,and work great with all my favorite guitars, pedals and tube selections. (The kit includes tube and speaker swapping recommendations).
Thenew switch settings have the most contrast when the VOLUME control is between 9and 3 o’clock, but be sure to check the combinations with the different inputjacks (MIC input sounds best to me) and the complete volume/gain range of bothsettings. (For example the Boost at low VOLUME settings produces a “super jangle”).
This kit includes quality parts and detailed instruction with pictures.
It does not include the amp or additional tubes.
