Mod Kit for the Vox Custom AC15C1 amp
(Also supports AC15CC1 and other models)
This is a modification kit – the amp is not included
Background: I love the Vox AC30 but it is way too big and too loud for small gigs and recording sessions. I have been trying the various product versions of the AC15, looking for the AC30 sound in a smaller, less expensive and more practical package. Until now, most AC15 models didn’t sound enough like an AC30 and didn’t have enough clean headroom.
Vox recently released the Custom AC15C1 – Most of the features of the AC30 (2 channels, top boost, cut knob, reverb and tremolo) but still not quite a “little AC30” sound-wise.
Enter the BitMo VoxMo15 mod kit that adds a 3-way switch with 2 new voicings to either the NORMAL or TOP BOOST channel, getting you closer to the classic AC30 tone. This really makes the amp much more versatile. With the 2 channel AC15C1, if you put an A/B/Y foot switch (not included) on the inputs, you can switch or mix the channels remotely. Cool!
You do not lose anything. The middle position of the added switch is the stock configuration of the amp.
Switch position 1 lowers the gain, increases the headroom and provides a “Super Jangle” voicing perfect with your Rickenbacker 12 string for Byrds and Beatles. With a tighter bass and enhanced mid-treble response, it also works wonders for removing the mud from humbucker pickups. If you are a Vox fan, you will love this voicing!
Switch position 3 boosts and shifts the mid frequencies down and raises the gain for a stout crunch to full-on overdrive that can go from crunch to chocolaty brown cello sound to that classic singing “overdriven AC30” tone. Works great with the cut control – think Brian May!
All voicings are very touch sensitive, going from warm or sparkly clean to balzout overdrive with lots of interesting shades in between, with various flavors of that magical Vox midrange.
Note: The instructions are specifically for the Custom AC15C1 but also include slightly more generic directions for the Custom Classic AC15CC and other VOX AC15 tube amps.
Assumptions, warnings, etc:
· While these modifications are easy to do, you will void your warrantee.
· Tools needed: screwdriver, knife, soldering iron, rosin core solder, wire stripper, needle nose pliers, drill and bits.
· I consider these mods to be of moderate complexity - not recommended for complete novices.
· Skills needed: be able to solder and drill a hole in the metal chassis.

--- User feedback on the BitMo VoxMo4 mods ---- I just wanted to thank you for the overall excellence of the BITMO mod kit for the AC4. This has been (I think) my sixth BITMO kit, and though quality has always been excellent, I believe you've outdone yourself on this one. Up until now, my favourite amps have been my Velocette, my AC306TBX with blue alnicos, and my BITMO modded Valve jr with the Brat pull top-boost and the Spanky. I have a new favourite. The AC4 though an alnico speaker with your mod kit sounds the best of anything I've heard for recording. Add to that the fact that with the voicing switch you can nail three classic Vox tones quickly and effortlessly! Initially, while the amp sounded good, it was a bit of a one-trick pony but this mod is a must have for anyone with an AC4 that wants it to be as good at three things as the stock amp is at one or anyone that wants to run a guitar with humbuckers through it. A great assortment of tones from U2 chime in the third position to Queen harmonic distortion.
